Skiing the Pioneer Backcountry: A New Generation of Skiers Discover the Routes of Pioneer Skier Florian Haemmerle
The Ketchum Sun Valley Historical Society’s Ski and Heritage Museum is pleased to host an open house featuring an exhibit on skiing the Pioneer Mountain backcountry following the routes first set by early Sun Valley ski instructors in the 1940’s. Drawing from 10th Mountain Division experience, Florian Haemmerle was one instructor who mapped out many backcountry skiing routes in the local mountains. Recently, local skier Zach Crist turned friends Kitt and Cody Doucette on to these historical routes while planning a trek for a magazine article. With research assisted by KSHVS and the Sun Valley Ski Club, the Doucettes, Crist, and other local skiers followed routes set by Haemmerle around the existing Pioneer Cabin. The current exhibit includes photographs from the recent trip with a history of the 10th Mountain Division and Florian Haemmerle. Come join us at the Ski and Heritage Museum, located in the Ketchum Forest Service Park on First Street and Washington, this Friday, March 15th from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm for an open house highlighting this skiing adventure. The event is free of charge with donations accepted. Refreshments will be served and several of the skiers involved in the project will be present to answer questions.
